Rabbit Vaccinations and Neutering

All rabbits should be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD).We do this using the combination vaccine Nobivac Myxo-RHD. This can be given from 5 weeks of age. Immunity takes 3 weeks to fully develop and in most cases boosters are only needed every 12 months. There is a new strain of VHD (called RHD-2) not covered by this annual vaccination. A separate vaccine is available for this: please discuss this further with your vet if you are concerned.

Does not intended for breeding should be neutered, under general anaesthetic, from 4 ½ months of age. This helps prevent aggressive behaviour, unwanted pregnancy, false pregnancy and uterine cancer. Over 50% of unspayed female rabbits will eventually suffer from uterine cancer.. Bucks should be castrated under general anaesthetic from a similar age to prevent urine spraying, aggressive behaviour and the development of testicular tumours.
